Why are RDE norms required?

Air pollution is a major concern in India, with many cities battling poor to severe air quality for a large part of the year. Introduction of RDE norms will reduce vehicular contribution to air pollution.

Stage 2 BS 6

To reduce vehicular emissions, India had introduced the BS 6 norms back in 2020 skipping the BS 5 norms going from BS 4 to BS 6 norms directly and now Stage 2 BS 6 norms will come into effect.

What does RDE compliance require?

Installation of Selective Catalytic Reduction, Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Onboard Diagnostic (OBD) to monitor emission levels in BS6 vehicles. Introduction of Real Driving Emission (RDE) Norms will measure real-world and real-time emissions of a vehicle in addition to lab tested emissions.

What will the implementation of RDE norms do?

RDE norms aim to monitor and reduce real world vehicular emissions by onboard monitoring and diagnostics of emissions with Portable Emissions Measurement System (PEMS) instead of lab testing of vehicles for emissions data.

What does RDE norms compliance require?

The upcoming RDE norms will require all diesel engine vehicles to be equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems onboard. This system uses ADBlue to reduce emissions and convert NOx into water, nitrogen and small traces of CO2.

Which vehicles will be most impacted?

Cars with smaller diesel engines below 2.0L are likely to be impacted the most as bigger diesel engines were already equipped with SCR systems when BS 6 was first implemented now smaller engines will require the same technology adding to its costs thus many companies will be axing smaller diesel engine options from their lineup.

How will it impact you?

To comply with these upcoming norms there will be a rise in the production cost of these vehicles which will result in an increase in price of vehicles with the implementation of these norms.
