Between 2014 and 2022, approximately 15 elephants were killed each year on railway tracks across India.

According to the data released by the Railway Ministry, 135 elephants were killed on tracks between 2014 and 2022.

2018 - the most lethal year for elephants:

The most deaths were reported in 2018. 26 jumbos died that year across Indian tracks. 2021's tally of 19 came second.

The Railway Ministry divided the jumbo death toll into eight zones. The most elephant casualties were reported in the Northeast region of the country.

North East Frontier Zone needs special attention:

65 elephants were killed while crossing tracks in Northeast India in the said period, News18 Kerala said in a report.
